How's the market?
April 22nd, 2008 9:29 AM

I am asked so often questions like these:

"How's the market?"  "Are there more buyers?"  "Are homes selling better?"  "Can you get a good mortgage rate?"

Well, the money questions are easy.  I am not a lending expert.  It is always best to address those questions to your banker or a lending professional.  They will have the latest rates and programs being offered for home buyers.

The other questions are a little harder.  Who knows what tomorrow may bring.  So I will say the market is currently what you make it.

Are you in a hurry to sell?  Do you have to sell?  Then there ARE buyers out there for your home.  You need a good agent (like Pam and I), excellent representation (like Pam and I give... are you getting these hints?), and a home that is priced well.

Are you looking to buy?  There are plenty of homes to see and several bargains.  But this area is still competitive and not every seller is in a hurry or willing to take any offer.  So, if you see your dream home don't lose it by acting too slowly or expecting the seller to take a lot less for their home.

The important thing to know is that you have options.

White Squirrel Capital of the World
April 28th, 2008 12:44 PM

Yes, Brevard is the "White Squirrel Capital of the World".

Legend has it that Brevard, North Carolina's White Squirrels arrived here over 50 years ago via a circus truck.  The way the story goes... The Mull family had two white squirrels that had been in their home every since a circus truck had overturned and the squirrels had escaped.

One day one of the squirrels got away and soon the other was let go to find their mate.  Not too long after, white squirrels began showing up all over Brevard.

It is important to note that these squirrels are NOT albinos squirrels, but a variant of the Eastern Grey Squirrel.

And Brevard LOVES their white squirrels!

-  In 1986, the Brevard City Council unanimously voted for an ordinance that established a sanctuary for all squirrels.  The ordinance reads, "The entire area embraced within the corporate limits of the city is hereby designated as a sanctuary for all species of squirrel (family Sciuriadae), and in particular the Brevard White Squirrel. It shall be unlawful for any person to hunt, kill, trap, or otherwise take any protected squirrels within the city by this section."

-  Brevard celebrates a annual White Squirrel Festival.  Which is May 24-25, 2008 this year.

-  Brevard has The White Squirrel Institute.

It is always fun to watch the expression of someone who has never seen one.  And a good idea to have a camera ready in case you can get a great picture.

Happy Earth Day!
April 22nd, 2008 8:42 PM

Here are things you can do in celebration of Earth Day and every day!

What We Can Do at Home!
www.earthday.net

Replace (3) frequently used light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs – reduce your carbon footprint by 450 pounds a year.

Car pool, use public transportation or drive a fuel efficient car – reduce your carbon footprint by 1 pound for every mile you do not drive.

Keep your tires properly inflated and get better gas mileage – reduce your carbon footprint another 20 pounds for each gallon of gas saved.

Change your car's air filter regularly.

Run your dishwasher only when it’s full.

Make sure your printer paper is 100% post consumer recycled.

Move your heater thermostat down two degrees in winter and up two degrees in the summer – reduce your carbon footprint by 2,000 pounds.

Keep your water heater insulated and the thermostat no higher than 120°F.

Clean or replace dirty air conditioner filters as recommended.

Take shorter showers because showers account for 2/3 of all water heating costs.

Use a low-flow showerhead because less water means less energy to heat the water – reduce your carbon footprint 350 pounds a year.

Use cold water to wash your clothes – reduce your carbon footprint by 500 pounds a year.  (there is even a new Tide that is for cold water)

Buy locally and reduce the amount of energy required to drive your products to your store.

Buy products with less packaging and recycle paper, plastic and glass – reduce your garbage by 10% and you’ll reduce your carbon footprint by 1,200 pounds a year.

Plant a tree because trees suck up carbon dioxide and make clean air for us to breathe.

Buy energy efficient appliances.

Weatherize and insulate your home, and consider double pane windows.

Turn off what you’re not using and even unplug electronics you’re not using – reduce your carbon footprint by thousands of pounds a year.

Buy organic food because the chemicals used in modern agriculture pollute the water supply, and require energy to produce.

We get more money for our sellers! In 2007, Sandra Purcell & Associates, Inc. got their sellers an average of 98% of list price compared to the rest of the Brevard Board of REALTORS at 96.6%.

BUYING?  We can show you homes that are 'For Sale by Owner' and any listings with other companies.  But have you checked out our listings lately?  We are presenting a home by an amazing waterfall, a home with tons of privacy but only 5 minutes to downtown Hendersonville, homes in the desirable neighborhood of Deerlake, and much more.

Pink is more than a color... it's an attitude!
April 9th, 2008 8:55 AM

AND it can be found at the Pink Beds.  Yes, Spring is here and warmer weather too and here's another hike we think you will enjoy.

Pink Beds

Enter the Pisgah Forest, pass the Ranger Station and Looking Glass Falls. The Pink Beds trail and parking lot is on the right just North of the Cradle of
Forestry.

This is an easy loop hike, about 4.5 miles and will take you ~2.5 hours.  There are many clearings that are great for picnics or if you are lucky to view wildlife.

And it's called the Pink Beds for a reason!  There is a profusion of pink wildflowers that grow there in the spring, including mountain laurel and rhododendron.  So don't forget your cameras and happy hiking!
