When my husband and I were thinking of partly retiring 3 years ago, like most people we worried about finances. So we talked to a financial expert. Then we came for a visit, looked around, and realized that we could live for far less in the south than other parts of the US, because of the low taxes and utility bills. What appealed to us about Transylvania County, south of Asheville? There are good reasons that Brevard, Hendersonville and Asheville North Carolina always appear near the top of Best Retirement Towns. http://www.mountainhomessouthernstyle.com/favorites/Top23Towns/index.htm
Let me share some of them:
Throw away that snow shovel! Be in a college town, with all the cultural benefits it offers. Hike, walk, and trout fish in beautiful yet rugged mountains (Pisgah National Forest, DuPont State Forest...) that are among the highest on the east coast -- 6,000ft. Imagine a county called the County of 250 Waterfalls! Hike to them, swim in some, jump through others. Some are like grottos and one is called Skinny Dip falls, postcard perfect and just far enough off the beaten track so not everyone knows where it is. Golf year-round, in affordable courses. In the summer, attend one of the 65+ music performances at the internationally known Brevard Music Center. Yo-Yo-Ma will play in the summer of 2008, and Keith Lockhart of the Boston Pops will direct beginning the summer of 2008. Continuing in the fall and winter is Brevard College's Porter Center, with 20+ well known music and comedy performances, as well as the Banf Film Festival. Downtown Brevard features charming old time shops, like O.P. Taylor's toy store, Bullwinkle's Soda Shop and a terrific bakery with a French-trained pastry chef. Of course Brevard and Hendersonville have many great restaurants, art galleries, craft shops, potters and metalsmiths, m any of whom give lessons. Brevard has a fabulous new county library, teeming with glass and sunlight, books, magazines and community events. The seasons are glorious, with vibrant red maples in the fall, maybe 3" of snow total for the winter, and warm, sunny days that cool off at night due to the mountains. Be close (30-40 min drive) to funky Asheville, with the Biltmore Estate and reputation as being one of the nicest cities in the South. Farms galore, friendly people, several hospitals, and some of the most caring communities I've ever known. We have more volunteers and volunteer opportunities than white squirrels. (Yes, we have white squirrels.) Strangers greet you in the supermarket, and hold open doors, and give you their parking space. Rediscover rock solid values, clean living, fellowship, fresh mountain air and natural beauty, come for a visit. Plus the high school and college have great sports teams, and the college even lets the public dine at their cafeteria (for a small fee.) Very close to heaven on earth. You can live in town, out of town, on a mountain, in a valley, near a river, with land or without. You choose. Don't wait. Life is short!
